Garage to ADU Transformation with Deck and Artist Studio
Repurposed garage for community event venue below, and living space above
Our client envisioned converting their garage into an ADU that could serve as a rental space for local artists while providing a studio below. With plans to eventually inhabit the space themselves, they prioritized abundant natural light and adaptability. As a seasoned portland adu contractor, we know how important it is to get some natural light into the building. To do this we installed expansive picture windows, transom windows, and a glass sliding door that opens onto a welcoming deck. Vaulted ceilings and skylights in both the common area and bathroom further brighten the space, creating a radiant and inviting atmosphere throughout the entire ADU.
From Standard Garage to a multi purpose 2-Story ADU
The project began as a typical single-story detached garage behind a classic Portland home. The homeowner wanted more than just extra square footage—they envisioned a multi-purpose space that could offer both functional living quarters and creative studio space.
We completely rebuilt the structure into a modern, two-story ADU that now features:
A lower-level performance / artist studio: A warm, inviting venue is perfect for intimate gatherings—whether it’s live music, spoken word, or stand-up comedy. Strong dark colors, and acoustic-friendly materials create an inspiring setting for both artists and audiences."
A private upper-level living space: Above the studio, we created a bright, efficient living unit that includes a full kitchen, bath, full bedroom, flex space for office or guests, and open living area. Large windows connect the space to the outdoors, and skylights bring in all-day light.
A balcony/ deck: Accessed directly from the living space, this deck offers incredible privacy and views—an ideal spot for morning coffee, entertaining, or simply enjoying a quiet moment near the trees.

Below is the journey of this garage transformation. It went from a humble one-story garage into a dynamic two-story structure featuring an intimate performance space below and a full living area above. This once dumpy garage has transformed into a vibrant, multi-functional ADU. It's full of life, creativity, and purpose.
Because the office was designed as a "flex space", it serves multiple purposes. This area can function as a studio, a potential bedroom, or even as overflow for the living area. Moreover, with the addition of a custom accordion door, the space can adapt based on the client’s needs.
Designed for Flexibility, Built for the Future
Like many of our projects, this ADU was built to be flexible over time. It can serve as a guest house, long-term rental, or even a space for aging family members. The artist studio below can evolve with the homeowner’s needs—whether that’s a workshop, home office, or gallery space.
This ADU that we built was probaly one of the bigger types of ADU conversions that we we're allowed to do in the city of Portland. It is 800 square feet of living space on top, which is the max allowed by the city of portland, and 800 square feet for the event space below. The two spaces are not connected internally, and there is a fire wall, or fire cieling rather, between the two spaces. This is definitely a smart option if you want to maximize the amount of building space on your property. Its also the most expensive option when building an ADU. Anytime you add a second story to a building its going to increase the cost significantly. This is a great option for a garage conversion, and we recommend building on top if you have the opportunity to do so. If you have a garage and want to do something a little different, there are lots of other options to pick from.
