Converting a garage to an ADU in Portland
Transforming a Garage into a Functional ADU
We transformed a simple, underused garage to an ADU in Portland. Drawing on inspiration from Japandi styling—a fusion of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian warmth—the goal was to create a space that felt calm, open, and functional. Despite a compact footprint of just 450 square feet, we were able to squeeze in a one bed one bath ADU that feels much bigger than it is.

The bathroom was a particular priority for the client. They envisioned a spa-like retreat within the ADU—something that included both a standing shower and a soaking tub. With only 450 square feet to work with in total, fitting both of these features into the bathroom took some creative problem-solving. Through smart spatial planning and a willingness to rework the original layout, we were able to design a bathroom that delivers comfort without compromise.
To create a cohesive aesthetic, we chose materials and finishes that align with Japandi principles. In the bathroom, a contemporary ribbon maple tile in a matte finish lines the walls, offering a subtle texture and natural tone. This is anchored by slate grey floor tiles, which provide visual weight and contrast in the wet areas, grounding the space. The ribbon maple tile also flows behind the soaking tub. The adjacent shower area is delineated by glass to keep the space open and bright

The layout was carefully considered to maximize both form and function. One of the biggest challenges was working within the constraints of the original garage structure while ensuring the new space didn’t feel cramped or overly segmented. By opening up the layout and bringing in as much natural light as possible, the ADU feels larger and more welcoming than its square footage suggests. Large windows and glass doors allow daylight to flow through the space throughout the day.
Throughout the ADU, simplicity is key. Lighting was selected not just for functionality, but also to contribute to the overall atmosphere: soft, diffused pendants, warm LED strips under cabinetry, and plenty of daylight during waking hours.

Japandi style is a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design principles. It combines the minimalist, functional elegance of Japanese aesthetics with the warmth, coziness, and simplicity of Scandinavian design. Key elements include clean lines, natural materials like wood and stone, muted and earthy color palettes, and an emphasis on craftsmanship. Japandi spaces feel calm and uncluttered, organic textures, and plenty of natural light. The result is a calm, interior that balances beauty with practicality.
Here are a couple of photos from before we started the project. It was more or less a traditional detached garage. The space was underutilized and mainly a spot to store bikes.
Converting a Garage to an ADU in Portland can be a valuable way to expand livable space, generate rental income, or create multi-generational housing. Even if you have a small space there is always a solution.
